What is Colon Cancer?
Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon). Rectal cancer is cancer of the last few inches of the colon. Together, they are referred to as colorectal cancers and they make up the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. There is no single cause for colon cancer. However almost all colon cancers begin as benign polyps which develop into cancers over a period of many years. Polyps may be small, so it's important to get regular screening tests to help prevent polyps from developing into cancer.
Most cases of colon cancer have no symptoms, however, classic symptoms may include diarrhea, constipation, or other change in bowel habits that does not resolve, blood in the stool, and persistent cramping, gas or abdominal pain. Despite the relatively high number of cases and deaths, screening tests, along with a few changes to your diet and lifestyle, can dramatically reduce your overall risk of developing colon cancer.
How can I reduce my risk of Colon Cancer?
-Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
-Limit fat, especially saturated fat.
-Take vitamins and minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, B-6 and B-9.
-Limit alcohol consumption.
-Stop smoking.
-Talk to your doctor about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if you are a woman past menopause.
Exercising and maintaining a healthy body body weight are also great ways to promote your overall health and combat colon cancer.
