Why doesn't Beaded Royalty offer child bracelets in smaller sizes?
On February 10, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) went into effect. The law was created by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and affects all manufacturers and importers of children's products. A children’s product is one designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger.
Businesses must take appropriate steps to be sure that their products conform to all aspects of the law and safety standards, including the new lead content limit. Beaded Royalty has chosen to remove products from our website intended for children 12 years of age or younger. Here is why:
The 925 sterling silver we use in our designs is considered inherently safe by the CPSIA law. However, the Swarovski lead crystals we use in our designs are 32% lead (by definition, lead crystal is >30% lead) and cannot legally be recommended for use in children's jewelry. That being said, here is what Swarovski said about their lead crystal products:
"Recently, there has been an increased regulatory focus on potential human exposure to lead from various consumer products, including jewellery. Crystal has unique properties. The crystal manufacturing process creates a matrix which inhibits the mobility of lead. In other words, lead is bound into the structure of the crystal. Because of this structure, lead crystal poses no significant risk of excessive lead exposure to human health via surface contact (hand to mouth), mouthing or even ingestion. Indeed, Swarovski crystals have been tested under a variety of test methods for extractable lead. Test conditions and procedures do vary, but lead levels are well below regulatory limits even when the crystal is tested in an acid solution to maximize the release of lead."
