What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. A defective gene causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs leading to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas stopping natural enzymes from absorbing food.
About 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year. Fifty years ago, few children with CF lived to the age of 10. Today, advances in research have extended life many people with CF into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
There are several screening tests for CF. More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. The genetic carrier test can help detect carriers, who might pass CF onto their children. Newborn screening can lead to early detection and treatment.
