What is Parkinson's Disease?
Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder that is both chronic and progressive, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. As many as 1.5 million Americans suffer from Parkinson's disease. Approximately 15 percent of people with Parkinson's are diagnosed before the age of 50, but incidence increases with age.
Parkinson's disease is the result of the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. The four primary symptoms are tremor in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face; stiffness of the limbs and trunk; slowness of movement; and impaired balance and coordination. As the symptoms become more pronounced, patients may have difficulty walking, talking, or completing other simple tasks.
There are no blood or laboratory tests to diagnose Parkinson's disease. Diagnosis is based on medical history and a neurological examination. Scientists believe Parkinson's disease may result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, but there is still much to learn about the cause and cure.
